Although Tetrahydrocannabinol’s beneficial sister is on an upward climb to stardom in the world of cannabinoids, very few people know much about Delta-8. From the lingo to abbreviations and everything in between, we feel that it is our duty as leaders in the industry to construct the first Delta-8 glossary.

This Delta Extrax – Delta-8 Glossary will consist of many words, terms, phrases, and abbreviations that relate to Delta-8-THC. We feel that instead of writing a boring article, a comprehensive list will help you learn about Delta-8-THC easier, and at a much faster pace. Don’t know what cannabinoids are? Delta-8 Words and Terms

A

Aroma: A term often used to describe a smell and/or taste of a plant, flower, or concentrate.

B

Broad Spectrum: A term used to describe a cannabis product that contains all of the cannabinoids that naturally occur in the cannabis plant, except THC.

C

Cannabidiol (CBD): A chemical compound native to hemp. The cannabinoid is found primarily in the flowers and leaves of the hemp plant and is considered to be one of the most powerful cannabinoids in terms of benefits. It is known for supporting both body and mind in many ways.

Cannabinoid 1 (CB1): The CB1 receptor is located in the body’s Endocannabinoid System and mediates physical and psychoactive effects.

Cannabinoid 2 (CB2): The CB2 receptor is the second receptor located in the body’s Endocannabinoid System and regulates inflammation and immune response throughout the immune and peripheral nervous systems, including the gut, spleen, liver, heart, kidneys, bones, blood vessels, lymph cells, endocrine glands, and reproductive organs.

Cannabinoids: Chemical compounds native to the cannabis plant. These compounds bind to the body’s Endocannabinoid System (ECS) to produce various effects, such as pain relief and more.

Cannabinoid Profile: A term used to describe the amount of all cannabinoids in the cannabis plant.

Cannabis: A reference to a group of three plants, including Cannabis Sativa, Cannabis Indica, and Cannabis Ruderalis.

Cartridge: Refers to a small tank-like part that is used with a vaporizer. The cart typically has a 510-threaded connection that can be attached to any 510-threaded battery, a heating element, and a mouthpiece. The tank portion, which is often constructed of glass. The cartridge, such as the Delta 8 Cartridge, houses the concentrate or oil material.

Coil (Heating Element): A part used in a vaporizer to heat concentrate and turn cannabinoids into a vapor.

Concentrate (Extract): A reference to any material created by refining cannabis flowers, such as oils. Concentrates have a much higher potency.

Dab / Dabbing: The act of placing a “dab” (small amount) of cannabis concentrate on a preheated surface, creating concentrated vapor, which can be inhaled.

Delta-8: The National Cancer Institute describes Delta-8 as an analogue of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) with antiemetic, anxiolytic, appetite-stimulating, analgesic, and neuroprotective properties. Also, a psychoactive compound found in cannabis.

Distillate: A translucent oil that does not contain any of the undesirable compounds from the cannabis plant. It is a highly refined cannabis extract that can be derived from raw flower or biomass and can be used to vaporize, dab, or mix as an ingredient in other products, such as topicals and edibles.

E

Endocannabinoid System (ECS): A group of receptors that make up a complex regulatory system throughout the human brain, body, and central and peripheral nervous system. It adjusts the flow of neurotransmitters and regulating bodily functions, such as sleep, emotion, movement, and appetite.

Extraction: The process of removing cannabinoids from the cannabis plant. Processes include alcohol extraction, butane extract, and C02 extraction.

Farm Bill: A reference to the 2018 Farm Bill, which made Industrial Hemp legal in the United States. The 2018 Farm Bill made all derivatives, isomers, and cannabinoids in hemp legal, as long as the final product has less than 0.3% Delta-9-THC.

Flower: Refers to the hairy or sticky parts of the cannabis plant. The flower is harvested for consumption in various products.

Full Spectrum: A term used to describe a cannabis product that contains all of the cannabinoids that naturally occur in the cannabis plant.

Hemp: The cannabis plant or any part of the plant, whether growing or not, with a Delta-9-THC concentration of no more than 0.3% on a dry weight basis. Also known as Industrial Hemp.

Hemp Extract: A hemp extract is an oil that is left after deriving the cannabinoids from the cannabis plant. The oil or hemp extract can be a “full spectrum extract” if it contains all of the cannabinoids from the cannabis plant, a “broad spectrum extract” if it contains all terpenes, flavonoids, and cannabinoids but THC, and there is also an “isolate” extract that contains only an isolated cannabinoid.

Hybrid: The cross between two different strains of cannabis.

I

Indica: A reference to Cannabis indica. It is a species of cannabis that originated from the Middle East and Asia. Indica commonly produces relaxing effects and often has sedative qualities.

Indoor: A term used to describe growing cannabis indoors, gaining complete control of the environment.

Industrial Hemp: Describes the cannabis plant, which contains a concentration of no more than 0.3% of Delta-9-THC.

Isolate: A cannabis extract that isolates a specific cannabinoid and contains nothing more.

Isomers: A reference used to describe compounds that have the same chemical formula but different structures, chemical, and pharmacological properties. Both CBD and THC are isomers.

Marijuana: A term used to describe dried cannabis flower with a concentration of Delta-9-THC greater than 0.3% on a dry weight basis. Additional terms include Mary Jane, Pot, Dank, and more.

Medical: A reference to describe medical cannabis or the use of.

Outdoor: A term used to describe growing cannabis outdoors, where it is exposed to natural sunlight and elements.

Oil: The oil that is left after the cannabis extraction process. Often referred to as concentrate.

Packaging: Any container or wrapper that is used for enclosing or containing any cannabis product for retail sale.

Processing: A term used to describe the harvesting, drying, curing, trimming, and separation of parts in the cannabis plant.

Psychoactive: A term used to describe a drug that affects the mind. Both Delta-8-THC and Delta-9-THC are psychoactive, while CBD is not.

Psychotropic: A term used to describe a whole range of substances that affect one’s mental processes, licit and illicit, of interest to drug policy.

Recreational Cannabis: The intentional use of cannabis for enjoyment.

Sativa: A reference to Cannabis sativa, which is a species of the cannabis plant. The species originates from outside of the Middle East and Asia. It has strains that are from areas such as South America, Africa, Thailand, and the Caribbean. Sativa commonly produces more cerebral effects.

Strain: Cannabis plants that have specific characteristics. Often given a name to distinguish the difference between cannabis or difference between characteristics.

Terpenes: Fragrant oils secreted from the resin glands of flowers that provide aromatic diversity. Often used to describe the smell or taste of flowers.

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC): The most common and the top cannabinoid in the cannabis plant known for its psychoactive effects.

Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid (THCA): The most abundant cannabinoid in the cannabis plant. It gets decarboxylated and formed into THC. This process can happen from smoking, vaporizing, or heating.

Vaporizer: A device that heats cannabis flowers and concentrates to activate cannabinoids and turn them into vapor.
